Your Process

Internal Verification is a process you can put in place to ensure that all your assessors are assessing in the same way and to the same standard.

Most competency management systems will include internal verification as part of the system.

The responsibility for internal verification is given to people who are often referred to as Internal Verifiers.

The internal verifiers usually have two responsibilities:

Supporting your assessors.

Carrying out the process of internal verification (or auditing the assessments).

There are different ways that you can set-up and run your internal verification process, and we can help you choose the best option for you.

So if you decide to work with us, the first thing we will ask about is your internal verification process.

We believe that your internal verifiers need to be trained on your verification process if you want them to be able to apply this back in the work place.

Don’t worry if you have not yet agreed your internal verification process.  We can help you with this.

Training Options

When you are thinking about training for your internal verifiers, there are a few things for you to think about.

By working with your internal verifiers at a one day workshop, we can help them understand what you need them to do, help them understand their responsibilities and make sure they are clear on your procedures.

In most cases, we would cover the following content within the context of your own competence management system:

Introduction to Internal Verification and your procedures.

Detailed look at the assessment process in your organisation.

Developing & supporting assessors - your role as internal verifier.

Monitoring assessment practice - what you need to do and how to get the best results.

Best practice & related information.

What next?

You may also want us to help your internal verifiers with the additional skills they will need in this role, such as communication skills, coaching and mentoring and building relationships.

All training can be delivered face-to-face in-house or in open programmes, or by distance learning.

Qualifications

If you are looking for a qualification for your internal verifiers, we find the Internal Verifier Award (Learning & Development 11) from the SQA is a good option.

What to watch

Qualification: SQA Internal Verifier Award (L & D 11).

Your internal verifiers are signed-off as competent using your internal verification process.

Your employees will receive a recognised qualification.

Some internal verifiers can find it to be a lot of work.

Remember to make sure the qualification aligns to your internal verification process, or it might not go as well as you hoped!

While supporting your internal verifiers to achieve their qualification, we also ensure that each internal verifier understands your assessment process, has the skills, knowledge and approach to be able to audit the assessment process, and is able to support the assessors.

We always prefer to include the internal verification and assessment process of the organisation in the training as we find this is the best way to help the internal verifiers succeed back in the workplace.

We can provide this training at your site, through distance learning or as an open programme.

Tips for Success

During the early stages of implementation of a new competency management system, you will mainly focus on helping your assessors, ensuring your have portfolios in place for the highest risk roles and assessing the competence of those job holders.

However, you will quickly get to the point where you need to audit the work of your assessors to ensure everyone is assessing in the same way and to the standard you require.

To be ready for this stage, it is important to identify who will carry out internal verification and give these people the training they need.

Training of these individuals needs to focus on helping them to:

Understand the role of the assessor, the procedures the assessors need to follow and what support they might need.

Understand the role of the internal verifier in achieving consistency in assessment.

Be able to sample and verify completed assessments, following the agreed procedures of the organisation.

Be able to provide feedback to assessors and address any areas for improvement.
