Level 2

A Level 2 qualification in Aquaculture requires a candidate to complete 10 units, 7 of which are mandatory in Fin Fish and 6 of which are mandatory in Shellfish.  All of the pathways within an SVQ are relevant to a specific sector in the aquaculture Industry.  This is undertaken in the workplace to assess a candidate’s competence whilst they are doing their job.

The pathways involved in an Aquaculture Level 2 qualification are:

  • Fin Fish
  • Shellfish

All candidates will also be required to complete 5 core skills if they have not already done so at school or college at Access 3 level.  They are:

  • Communication
  • Numeracy
  • IT
  • Problem Solving
  • Working with Others

Another requirement at Level 2 is for all candidates to carry out a Health and Safety and Food Hygiene test paper.

Level 3

A Level 3 qualification in Aquaculture requires a candidate to complete 6 units, 4 of which are mandatory in Fin Fish and 3 of which are mandatory in Shellfish.

A Level 3 qualification requires the candidate to gather more evidence compared to a Level 2.  All of the pathways within an SVQ are relevant to a specific sector in the aquaculture industry.  This is undertaken in the workplace to assess a candidate’s competence whilst they are doing their job.

The pathways involved in an Aquaculture Level 3 qualification are:

  • Fin Fish
  • Shellfish

All candidates will also be required to complete 5 core skills if they have not already done so at school or college at an intermediate level.  They are:

  • Communication
  • Numeracy
  • IT
  • Problem solving
  • Working with others

Another requirement at Level 3 is for all candidates to have completed two or more industry specific certificates appropriate to the apprentice and business in which they work in.

They could be:

  • Sea survival Sea crane/stability course
  • Emergency first aid Food hygiene
  • Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent Fish health course
  • Basic welding Basic fish farm hygiene course
  • Lift truck operation Fish vaccination course
  • Abrasive wheels MCA Marine diesel engine course
  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) or equivalent IT training
  • GMDSS VHF radio course
